Brush Up on Oral Care Basics This New Year

We all know that we need to brush and floss our teeth to keep our mouths healthy each year, but sometimes we forget the specifics.  Understanding those important details can help you keep your smile shining brightly for the coming year.

Here are a few important oral care tips that can help you have a smile you will love for 2018!

Proper Flossing Technique

Flossing is absolutely essential to healthy teeth, so don’t neglect the floss this year. Here is the breakdown of proper flossing:

  1. Start with a long piece of floss (about 18 inches or so) and wind it around the middle fingers of your hands leaving 2 inches of taut floss in the middle.
  2. Carefully glide the floss between your teeth in smooth motions, catching every crevice. Never forcefully snap your floss.
  3. Lastly, you should slide the floss all around your tooth to ensure you pick up any stuck food or plaque.

Toothbrush Maintenance

Brushing your teeth is important, but if your toothbrush is poorly maintained, your teeth won’t be as healthy as you would like.

Your toothbrush should be replaced as soon as it shows any wear or tear, or after 3 months of use (whichever comes first). This will keep your brush in top form so your teeth receive the best possible care at home.

Remember that although home oral care is very important, it is not enough. Your home oral care must be combined with regular visits to the dentist for optimal care. Contact Dr. Gleave today to set up your next checkup!
